OU Children’s Hospital is participating in a 5 year multicenter study called HIKO-STEC (Hyperhydration to Improve Kidney Outcomes in Children with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli Infections) beginning September 1, 2022. Children 9 months to 18 years of age with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections will be randomized to receive either hyperhydration vs conservative fluid management to determine if either method results in improved kidney outcomes (HUS, dialysis, etc.). We would like any patient with stool culture positive for E.coli O157:H7 or other STEC strains to be referred to OU Children’s Hospital for management by our Emergency Department and Nephrology teams. Patients can be referred by calling the OU Children’s Hospital Access Center at 405-271-7363
